Dear Serena,
I've tried so hard not to think of you, but its hard.
Dear Serena,
I can't get you out of my mind, and I know we're over, but it's true. There's no one else I'd rather be with.
Dear Serena,
Yeah, I'm speechless when it comes to you. I'm sorry, but it's the truth.
I'm nothing with you.
I miss you.
Dan.
Her eyes darted across the paper, tear stricken and red rimmed. She couldn't bring herself to put it down or even stop reading. It felt like her heart strings were being pulled, and she could do nothing about it. It was like something she couldn't even bring herself to understand, and yet it made all of the sense in the world. It felt weird, but the good kind of weird.
Serena brought herself to reality after reading it once more, placing it to the side. It took her a couple of minutes to compose herself, but as she did, she started writing back to his letter, no words coming as if she were silenced. She thought of all the times they'd spent together; the good and the bad. It wasn't fake, she could never classify it as such a thing. Their love was real, and time after time they'd wind up in each other's arms, back to where they knew they belonged.
After a few hours of sitting and staring at the page, waiting for somemthing that made sense to appear on her page, Serena was on the verge of quitting. The words just wouldn't come to her, and it frustrated her highly. She sat and stared and looked through her mind desperately, trying to think of something to say that would make sense. Finally, she came up with something, but she knew it probably didn't make sense.
Dear Dan,
I can't stop thinking about you. I'm no good with words either. It's okay.
Yeah, I miss you too.
Serena
P.S, I love you.
She sent it the next day, and waited for her response, but never got one. Instead, she got a letter written from someone else, someone she'd never met or even heard of. It was a surprise to read, and not something she'd ever expect to read in her life, but as she did, she knew that it wasn't what it thought. It broke her heart from the beginning.
Dear Miss Serena,
My name is Billy, I was one of Dan's friends. I got this to his address, I was his roomate. Dan, well, he passed away a couple of days ago. His dying wish was for me to send that letter he wrote and never got around to sending. I thought it wasn't much, but he said he wanted you to know what he thought. Dan really loved you, I can tell you that. He used to talk about this beautiful blond goddess who stole his heart and never gave it back.
Dan died in an automobile accident, but didn't die instantly. Sadly, he suffered the whole way through. But I was there and he kept saying “Serena, Serena, I want Serena.” It broke my heart, and I didn't even know who you were. If I did, I would of called you, I would've found a way to let you know everything that happened.
I'm sorry that I had to be the one to tell you.
Billy.
She cried herself to sleep that night, and finally realized. They was always something stuck in between them. First it was the lies, then it was the realization that maybe they went too fast, then it was the teacher. They were destined to be together, but there was always an obstacle that they would have to go through, and now, it would be death.
Maybe, just maybe, this was the end of their struggles.
